When Anthony Umina and Brian Doskocil decided to start their own roofing business in 1989 – after three weeks as summer laborers for a local roofing company – their boss predicted that he would be buying the duo’s equipment from them by summer’s end.
Fifteen years later, DunRite Roofing was named as one of the top 500 remodelers in the country – a designation the business has received every year since.
Customer service, high- quality work and affordable prices have been the benchmarks of DunRite from its humble beginnings in Anthony’s grandfather’s garage (the rent on Grandpa John Dudinsky’s building – free – fit perfectly into the new partners’ business plan). In those early days, their “business plan” entailed walking door-to-door and offering free estimates; they grew steadily through satisfied customer referrals.
The growth of the company eventually drew a friendly complaint from a neighbor, which then led to the fledgling company’s purchase of its first building in 1991.
In 1995, Brian sold his shares in the company to Anthony, who became a one-man sales, purchasing, project management, and maintenance operation. By that time, the company had also grown to include 30 employees and numerous roofing crews, and had exceeded a longtime goal of $1 million in sales in a single year.
In 1997, DunRite outgrew its first location and built a new complex in Hudson, Ohio, where the company is still headquartered. Dun-Rite expanded again in 2006 when adjacent properties were purchased, doubling the original size of the Hudson complex.
DunRite’s services also expanded during this time to include all aspects of home improvement. In 2001, the company became the first contractor in Northeast Ohio to be named a Master Elite roofing contractor by GAF Materials Corporation, North America’s largest residential and commercial roofing supplies company.
Today, DunRite has over 100 workers on staff and continues to grow. In 2010, GAF awarded DunRite its Certified Contractor Award, honoring the company for a high customer satisfaction rating.
Anthony, president of DunRite and his wife Alison, owner of DunRite, continue to expand the roofing business. They enjoy spending time with their two children who participate in multiple school activities. In their free time, Anthony and Alison enjoy all types of sports and spending time with family and friends.
And to date, Anthony hasn’t had to sell one piece of equipment back to his first employer.
